حسب نظام التقسيمات الإدارية رقم (47) لعام 2000م فقد تم تسمية لواء البترا بهذا الاسم ومركزه مدينة وادي موسى، وتتبع لاختصاص لواء البترا كل من وادي موسى (مركز اللواء)، الطيبة، الراجف، البيضــا، دلاغـة
انسجاما مع الاهداف الاستراتيجية لسلطة اقليم البترا التنموي السياحي والقيم التي يعمل عليها ونظرا لاهمية الجانب التنموي عند تشكيل السلطة جاءت مفوضية تنمية المجتمع والبيئة
عملت السلطة ومنذ نشأتها عام 2009 على استحداث برنامج المنح الدراسية لابناء المجتمع المحلي الدارسين في الجامعات الحكومية.
