Heritage Village Project: Completion 65%
General description of the project:
As a result of the increasing practice of economic activities in the archaeological site and the practices that cause inconvenience to the site visitors, and due to the increasing numbers of practitioners of these activities of the local population and their diversity among children, women, men and entire families and the expansion of shops licensed to sell refreshments and antiques inside the archaeological site in a random violating way that confused the tourism in the site and annoyed the tourists and put them in circumstances not suitable to visit to a world heritage site that needs calmness, reflection and thinking of the Arab Nabataeans creativity in drawing this unique master-piece in the world. This contradicts with the accommodation capacity of the site according to the UNESCO requirements, if the number of those present daily in Petra, in terms of tourists, service providers, practitioners of economic activities and unemployed persons looking for any business to earn from tourists.
In implementation of the decisions of the Council of Ministers decisions which based on in-depth studies and outputs of those studies carried out in PDTRA, which includes the establishment of a heritage village aimed at collecting service providers and practitioners of economic activities in this village, PDTRA calculated the returns from licenses, taxes, among others that establish a professional work that reflects the reality of the urban heritage of the inhabitants of this area and the other population groups in the region in a scientific, elaborated and controlled manner that prevents distortion and loss and creates may job opportunities through the commercial shops which will be part of this village.
As part of its plans to create a new investment tourism product by conducting studies and designs for the Heritage Village project taking into account the diversification and development of the tourism product in order to prolong the visitor's stay in Petra in implementation of the total strategic planning of Petra region (2011-2030).
This project encourages the revitalization of the cultural heritage system of the region by opening the way to finding traditional handicraft industries; practice them interactively with the visitor and presenting the material and non-material cultural heritage directly to tourists.
The project takes into account the visitor's movement inside the region and finding a site that attracts him after visiting the archaeological site, which will add value to the visit of the archaeological site and fill his spare time especially in the evening by watching the components and details of the heritage village which reflects the heritage of the city of Petra. This project will be linked with the transport project (the back road).
The design of this project is consistent with the topography of the area, land use and its particularities. PDTRA took into account mixing the natural rock formations located in the project land with the Project components and its interior designs.
Project goals:
- Creating a new tourist investment product through which PDTRA will provide the product and investment to benefit the local communities in the region, and constitutes a good return to PDTRA through investment.
- This project is an opportunity to improve and organize the commercial and traditional industries shops and their diversity of all trades, in a structured way to ensure comprehensiveness in providing services and shopping for tourists.
- By selecting the location of the project in Al- Beidha area, this will benefit the local community through the distribution of development gains on new sites and will be an initiative to open investments for cluster projects that will be established around this project.
- Prolong the visitor's stay in the region by providing new tourist products that allow the visitor to view and enjoy, and spend more time after visiting the archaeological site.
Project components:
The project will be established on a plot of land with a total area if (67) Donums. It will consist of:
- Heritage restaurant.
- Heritage bakery.
- Heritage clarification center.
- Public facilities and services.
- Educational cultural center.
- Management and observation center.
- Arts center.
- Prayer place.
- Outdoor theater.
- Special sites for seasonal activities.
- Shops.
- Sites for the production of aromatic and medicinal plants.
- Outdoor sittings.
- Pottery center.
- Outdoor yards and green areas.
- Public parking.
- Center for traditional jewelery industries.
Targeted groups:
The project will mainly target the Jordanian and foreign visitors of Petra, in addition to local residents.
